What is the Red Velvet strain?

Red Velvet is a modern dessert hybrid built from two fruit-forward parents. Lemon Cherry Gelato, a standout from the Sherbert family, gives it a bright cherry-citrus core and a thick coat of frost. Pina Acai, a tropical selection from the Acai line, contributes exotic fruit, rich pigment and the dense, rounded bud shape.

The combination lives up to its name. Plants grow to a medium height with sturdy branches, and as harvest approaches the rounded buds flush from green to a real crimson red beneath bright white trichomes. That color is not a trick of the camera: it is anthocyanin pigment that shows most strongly when nights run cool late in bloom.

The flavor matches the look, often described as cherry cake with a creamy, frosted finish. Phenotypes in the feminized line come in fairly uniform, so a tent of Red Velvet tends to look like a matched set. Every seed is bred to grow into a flowering female plant.

How it feels

People commonly describe a cheerful, smiling first wave followed by soft, cushioned relaxation and a calm, sleepy close. Most reports put the arc at two to three hours.

  1. First 10 minutesSweet lift

A happy, easygoing mood that makes conversation feel effortless.

  2. 30 to 60 minutesCushioned unwind

Smooth body relaxation settles in without heavy couch lock.

  3. 2 to 3 hoursCalm close

A quiet, contented finish with a gentle pull toward sleep.

Commonly reportedEuphoricRelaxedHappyCalm

Reported THC of 22-27% is strong, so start with a small amount. Dry mouth and dry eyes are commonly reported, and at higher doses some people feel anxious or lightheaded. General reports, not medical guidance.

Aroma, flavor and terpenes

Ripe cherry and sweet citrus lead, layered over vanilla cake and a creamy, almost frosting-like finish. The nose builds steadily through late flower and is easy to smell outside the tent without a filter.

Flavor notesCherryCakeCreamySweet

Keep drying temperatures near 60°F and humidity near 60% so the delicate cherry and cream notes survive. A cure of three to four weeks deepens the cake flavor.

How to grow Red Velvet

Rated moderate. It grows evenly and responds well to training; the skill is managing late-flower humidity and using cool nights to bring out the red.

Red Velvet stays manageable indoors at 3 to 5 feet, so a 3×3 or 4×4 ft tent works well. It is rated moderate: not fussy, but its rounded, tightly packed buds punish high humidity, and the best color takes a little planning.

Environment

  • Vegetative: 74-80°F with 55-65% relative humidity.
  • Flower: 68-79°F and 40-45% RH. Keep humidity firmly in that range after week five to keep powdery mildew and bud rot away.
  • Color: in the final two weeks, let lights-off temperatures fall 10-15°F below the daytime high. That gentle cold stress is what brings the crimson to the surface.

Light and training

Aim for 600-750 PPFD late in veg and 700-900 PPFD in flower under LED. Top once at the fifth node and use low-stress training to spread the branches flat. Because the buds stack round and heavy, lollipopping the lower growth before week three concentrates energy on the top sites.

Feeding

Feed lightly to moderately. Excess nitrogen in bloom keeps leaves dark green and can mute the red, so switch to a bloom formula on time and keep EC steady. Cal-mag is useful under LED.

Harvest timing

Most plants finish 8 to 9 weeks after the switch to 12/12. Use trichome color rather than bud color to judge ripeness. Mostly cloudy heads with a little amber give the balanced, smiling effect the strain is known for.

Seed to jar in about 22 weeks

A typical indoor timeline. Adjust veg to fit your space; flowering length comes from the genetics.

Week 1Week 22
  • Germinate weeks 1-1

    Moist paper towel, 75-80°F

  • Seedling weeks 2-3

    Soft light, 65-70% RH

  • Vegetate weeks 4-8

Top at node 5, start LST

  • Flower weeks 9-17

8-9 weeks; cool nights at the end

  • Dry and cure weeks 18-22

Growing Red Velvet outdoors in the US

Outdoors, Red Velvet grows into a 5 to 7 foot plant and finishes in mid October at most US latitudes. Plant out once your last spring frost has passed and nights are reliably above about 50°F. The cool nights of early autumn are an advantage here, because they deepen the red color naturally.

The catch is that those same weeks can bring rain. Rounded, dense buds hold moisture, so a wet stretch in October is the main threat to an outdoor crop. Give plants plenty of space, remove inner leaves to open the canopy, and keep a rain cover or hoop house ready. Our outdoor planting guide has dates by USDA zone.

Know your local rules first. Home growing is legal for adults in some states and not in others, and plant limits vary. See marijuana laws by state.

Will it finish where you live?

ExcellentInland California and the Southwest

Dry autumns with cool desert nights deliver both clean buds and deep color.

GoodColorado Front Range and Utah valleys

Crisp nights intensify the red; harvest before a hard frost at elevation.

GoodMidwest

Warm summers and cooling September nights suit it if October stays dry.

FairNortheast

Late-season humidity puts dense buds at risk, so prune hard for airflow.

PoorSoutheast and Gulf Coast

Warm, humid nights mute the color and raise mold pressure on round buds.

Red Velvet FAQ

Is Red Velvet indica or sativa?

Red Velvet is an indica-dominant hybrid. It grows with a medium, sturdy frame, and its effects move from a cheerful lift into smooth, calm relaxation.

How strong is Red Velvet?

Our supplier reports THC between 22% and 27%. Results shift with phenotype, growing conditions and harvest timing, so treat that range as typical rather than guaranteed.

How long does Red Velvet take to flower?

Expect 8 to 9 weeks of flowering after switching to a 12/12 light schedule. Outdoors in the US, harvest usually lands in mid October.

How much does Red Velvet yield?

Indoors, a good setup can produce about 1.3 to 1.6 ounces per square foot. Outdoor plants with full sun can produce roughly 16 to 19 ounces each.

Is Red Velvet beginner-friendly?

It is rated moderate. The plant grows evenly and handles training well, but its dense buds need humidity kept near 40-45% in late flower, which takes some attention.

What does Red Velvet smell and taste like?

Think cherry cake: ripe cherry and citrus up front, a baked vanilla middle and a creamy finish. Limonene, caryophyllene and linalool are the terpenes commonly linked to that profile.

Where does Red Velvet grow best in the US?

Dry regions with cool fall nights, such as inland California, the Southwest and the Colorado Front Range, give the best color and the cleanest buds. Humid Gulf Coast autumns are the toughest match outdoors.

Does Red Velvet really turn red?

Many phenotypes flush a genuine crimson in the last weeks of flower, especially when night temperatures run 10-15°F cooler than the day. In a warm room the buds may stay mostly green with red highlights, while flavor and potency are unaffected.
