Colorado Marijuana Seeds for High-Altitude Home Grows

Adults 21+ can grow six plants at home. Thin air, hail and an early October freeze decide which seeds work best.

Quick answerYes. Colorado adults 21 and older can grow up to six marijuana plants from seed, with no more than three flowering at once, inside an enclosed, locked area the public can't see into. Most homes are capped at 12 plants, and buying seeds is legal.

What Colorado law says about growing from seed

Amendment 64 put home cultivation into the state constitution in 2012. Adults 21+ may grow six plants, and no more than three can be flowering at one time. The state’s home grow guidance adds that plants must sit in an enclosed, locked area that can’t be viewed openly, which rules out pots on an open patio.

State law caps a residence at 12 plants unless a local rule allows more, and Denver and Colorado Springs both hold the line at 12. Colorado Springs bans outdoor cultivation outright, and Denver police have said a locked fence is not enough. A solid, roofed structure such as a lockable greenhouse is the safer standard, and HOA rules can add their own limits.

Seeds themselves are easy to get, and ordering them online for a legal home garden is routine. Selling your harvest still requires a license from the Marijuana Enforcement Division.

Colorado's growing climate: altitude rules everything

Colorado spans USDA zones 3b to 7b, and elevation explains most of that spread. Denver and Colorado Springs sit in zone 6a. Denver’s median last frost is May 5 and its first fall frost is October 9, about 156 frost-free days. Grand Junction on the Western Slope is zone 7a with about 171 days.

Mountain towns run much shorter. Aspen averages about 113 frost-free days and Steamboat Springs about 93, and temperatures fall roughly 3.5°F with every 1,000 feet of climb, so check your own elevation first.

Dry air keeps bud rot rare except during the July and August monsoon in the southwest. The bigger threats are hail (the northeast plains average 7 to 9 hail days a year), intense UV, wind and sudden September cold snaps. Day-to-night swings of 30°F are common in late summer, which deepens bud color but slows ripening once nights slip into the 30s.

Best seed types for Colorado growers

Season length matters more than anything else here. Autoflower seeds finish about 10 to 12 weeks from sprout no matter the day length, which makes them the safest pick above 7,000 feet and lets Grand Junction growers fit two runs into one summer.

On the Front Range, fast flowering seeds give you full-size photoperiod plants that still wrap up by late September. Compact, indica-leaning genetics shrug off chilly nights, and many Kush-family plants turn purple when temperatures dip into the 40s.

Long-flowering sativas are a gamble in a mountain greenhouse but shine in a basement tent with controlled light. With only six plants allowed, feminized seeds make sense because you won’t waste a precious slot on a male. Whatever you choose, read the listed flowering time. Anything longer than about nine weeks needs a heated greenhouse to finish safely before a Front Range freeze.

Indoor vs outdoor growing in Colorado

The locked-area rule pushes many Coloradans indoors, and a grow tent in a basement checks every box. Indoor growers here fight dry air rather than damp air, so seedlings appreciate a humidifier when relative humidity drops below 40%. Cool basements also stay near 65°F in summer, which keeps a tent from overheating under a strong LED light.

A sealed, lockable greenhouse is the outdoor option. It blocks hail, holds heat on cold nights and adds weeks to a mountain season. For month-by-month timing details, read our guide on when to plant marijuana outdoors.

Colorado marijuana seed FAQ

Is it legal to buy marijuana seeds in Colorado?

Yes. Adults 21 and older can buy seeds, and ordering them online for a personal home grow is common. Plants must stay within the six-plant limit and inside an enclosed, locked area.

How many plants can I grow in Colorado?

Each adult 21+ can grow six plants, with three or fewer flowering at once. State law caps a residence at 12 plants unless local law allows more, and Denver keeps that 12-plant cap.

Can I grow marijuana in my backyard in Colorado?

Not in an open yard. State guidance says plants must be in an enclosed, locked area that can't be viewed openly. A lockable, roofed greenhouse may qualify, but Colorado Springs bans outdoor grows, so check local code.

When should I start seeds in Colorado?

Front Range growers usually germinate in April and move plants into a greenhouse after mid-May, since Denver's median last frost is May 5. Mountain growers often wait until June before moving plants out.

Do autoflowers grow well at high altitude?

Yes. Autoflowers ignore day length and usually finish in 10 to 12 weeks, so they fit short mountain summers. Strong UV at altitude can stress seedlings, so give them partial shade at first.

This page is general information, not legal advice. Laws change, so confirm with the official sources linked above before you buy or grow. Federal note: Section 781 of H.R. 5371 changes the federal status of viable seeds from high-THC plants, currently scheduled for December 11, 2026. See /blog/are-marijuana-seeds-legal-in-the-us/.
