How to Grow Marijuana Indoors: A Beginner's Guide From Seed to Harvest
Everything a first-time grower needs to run one clean indoor cycle: the right tent and light, exact climate targets for each stage, feeding, training and a gear checklist.
What equipment do you need to grow marijuana indoors?
You need a light-tight space, a good LED, airflow, containers, a growing medium and nutrients. A grow tent is the simplest way to get the first three right, because its reflective walls, light-proof zippers and ports for ducting and cords solve problems you would otherwise solve with tape and plywood.
Pick a tent that fits your plant count
Size the tent to your room and to how many plants your state lets you grow. Leave at least 6 inches of walkway around it, and choose 6-7 ft of height so a light, hangers and a stretching plant all fit.
| Tent size | Photoperiod plants | Autoflower plants | LED (actual watts) | Pot size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2×2 ft | 1 | 1-2 | 100-150 W | 3 gal |
| 2×4 ft | 1-2 | 2-4 | 240-320 W | 3-5 gal |
| 3×3 ft | 1-3 | 3-4 | 270-360 W | 5 gal |
| 4×4 ft | 2-4 | 4-6 | 480-640 W | 5-7 gal |
| 5×5 ft | 4-6 | 6-9 | 750-1,000 W | 7-10 gal |
Power and airflow
Plan on about 30-40 actual LED watts per square foot for flowering, plus an inline exhaust fan sized to move the tent’s full air volume every 1-3 minutes. A 4x4x7 ft tent holds 112 cubic feet, so a 4 inch fan rated around 190 CFM handles it with room to spare for a carbon filter.
Indoor grow shopping checklist
Buy the light, fan and meters first. They decide your results more than any additive.
| Item | What to look for | Beginner tip |
|---|---|---|
| Grow tent | Thick canvas, light-proof zippers, 6-7 ft tall | Size it to your legal plant count |
| LED grow light | Full spectrum, published PPFD map, 2.5 µmol/J or better | Dimmable, so one light covers seedlings and flower |
| Inline fan and carbon filter | 4-6 inch, speed controller | Mount the filter inside, exhaust out of the tent |
| Clip fans | 1-2 oscillating fans | Gentle leaf movement, never a gale |
| Thermo-hygrometer | Reads temp and RH, records min and max | Place it at canopy height |
| Fabric pots | 3-7 gallon | Better drainage and root air than plastic |
| Growing medium | Quality potting mix with perlite, or coco coir | Soil is the most forgiving first choice |
| Nutrients | 2 or 3 part base line with veg and bloom ratios | Start at a quarter to half of the label dose |
| pH pen or drops, pH up and down | Calibrated pen preferred | Check every watering |
| Timer | Mechanical or digital, grounded | Most LEDs also have a built-in timer |
| Jeweler’s loupe | 60x magnification | For reading trichomes at harvest |
How much light do cannabis plants need indoors?
Cannabis needs about 200-400 µmol/m²/s as a seedling, 400-600 in veg and 600-900 in flower. Those numbers are PPFD, the usable light photons landing on the canopy each second. Multiply by hours on and you get DLI, the total light per day, which is what the plant actually banks.
| Stage | Light schedule | PPFD (µmol/m²/s) | DLI (mol/m²/day) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seedling | 18/6 | 200-400 | 13-26 |
| Vegetative | 18/6 | 400-600 | 26-39 |
| Flowering (photoperiod) | 12/12 | 600-900 | 26-39 |
| Autoflower after seedling stage | 18/6 or 20/4 | 400-700 | 26-50 |
Why more light usually means more yield
In a 2021 University of Guelph study, dry flower yield rose steadily as canopy light increased all the way to 1,800 µmol/m²/s, while cannabinoid potency did not change. For a home tent without added CO2, 600-900 in flower is a practical target. Pushing past about 1,000 demands tight temperature, humidity and feeding control to pay off.
Hanging height
Follow your fixture’s PPFD map rather than a generic rule. Most quality LEDs land in the flowering range 12-24 inches above the canopy at full power. Bleached, yellowing tops closest to the light mean it is too close or too strong, so raise it 3-4 inches or dim 10-20%.
What temperature, humidity and VPD should you target?
Keep daytime temperatures between 70°F and 82°F and lower humidity as the plant matures, from about 70% for seedlings to 40-50% late in flower. VPD (vapor pressure deficit) combines the two into one number that describes how hard the air pulls moisture from the leaves. In range, plants drink and transpire steadily.
| Stage | Day temp | Night temp | Relative humidity | VPD (kPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seedling | 72-80°F | 68-75°F | 65-75% | 0.4-0.8 |
| Vegetative | 72-82°F | 65-75°F | 55-70% | 0.8-1.2 |
| Early flower (weeks 1-4) | 70-80°F | 62-72°F | 45-55% | 1.0-1.4 |
| Late flower (week 5 to harvest) | 65-78°F | 60-70°F | 40-50% | 1.2-1.5 |
Read conditions at canopy height, not on the floor. A small humidifier fixes dry winter air in veg; a dehumidifier just outside the tent intake is the usual fix for muggy late-flower rooms. Keep night temperatures within 10°F of daytime to avoid moisture condensing on buds.
Which growing medium should beginners use?
Use a quality bagged potting mix with extra perlite for your first grow. Soil holds a buffer of nutrients and moisture, so a missed feeding or a pH slip does less damage.
Potting soil
Look for a light, airy mix with 20-30% perlite. Many bagged mixes carry enough nutrients for the first 3-4 weeks. Keep the water you pour in at pH 6.0-7.0. Soil grows a little slower than the alternatives but forgives the most.
Coco coir
Coco coir is shredded coconut husk. It drains fast and holds lots of air, so roots grow quickly, but it carries almost no nutrients. You feed with nearly every watering, add calcium and magnesium, and keep pH at 5.8-6.2. Great second-grow upgrade.
Hydroponics
Hydro systems grow plants in water or inert media and are the fastest option. They also punish mistakes fastest: a pump failure or a pH swing can hurt plants within hours. Save hydro for after you have a cycle or two under your belt.
How do you water and feed indoor cannabis?
Water when the pot feels light and the top 1 inch of soil is dry, then pour slowly until 10-20% drains out the bottom. In soil that is usually every 2-4 days. In coco, plants often need water daily once roots fill the pot.
Check pH every time
pH controls which nutrients roots can absorb. Outside the ideal window, a plant can starve in a pot full of food. Aim for 6.0-7.0 in soil and 5.8-6.2 in coco, and recalibrate your pen monthly.
Feed in two phases
Use a nitrogen-heavy veg formula until the flip or until autos show pistils, then switch to a bloom formula higher in phosphorus and potassium. Start at a quarter to half of the label rate and raise it only when lower leaves fade to pale green. Burnt, crispy leaf tips mean back off 25%.
Container size and watering volume
A 5 gallon pot in mid-veg usually takes about 0.5-1 gallon per watering. Seedlings in large pots should get small circles of water near the stem, not a full soak, until roots spread. Fabric pots dry faster than plastic, which helps prevent overwatering.
What are the basics of training cannabis plants?
Training spreads the plant into a flat, even canopy so more bud sites sit in strong light. It takes a few minutes a week and costs nothing but a few soft plant ties.
Low-stress training (LST)
LST means gently bending the main stem sideways and tying it down so side branches rise up to meet the light. Start around week 3-4 from sprout, when stems are flexible. It is the safest technique for autoflowers.
Topping
Topping removes the main growing tip above the 4th or 5th node, splitting the plant into 2 main colas. Use it on photoperiods only and give the plant about a week to recover before flipping to flower.
Light defoliation
Remove a few large fan leaves that shade bud sites and block airflow, once before the flip and again around day 21 of flower. Never strip more than about 20% of the leaves at once.
Indoor grow timeline: seed to harvest
- Germinate (days 1-5)Use the paper towel or direct soil method at 75-80°F. Our guide on how to germinate marijuana seeds walks through each method and planting depth.
- Seedling stage (weeks 1-2)18/6 light at 200-400 PPFD, 65-75% humidity, tiny amounts of water, no extra nutrients.
- Vegetative growth (weeks 3-8)Raise light to 400-600 PPFD, start feeding, begin LST and topping. Autoflowers start flowering on their own around weeks 3-5.
- Flip to 12/12 (photoperiods only)Switch the timer when plants reach about half your target height. Most strains stretch 50-100% over the next 2-3 weeks.
- Flowering (8-10 weeks for most hybrids)Raise light to 600-900 PPFD, switch to bloom nutrients, drop humidity to 40-50% in the final weeks, and keep the dark period completely dark.
- HarvestCut when most trichomes look milky with some amber. The harvest date calculator gives you a planning date from your flip or sprout date.
- Dry and cure (3-6 weeks)Hang branches at about 60°F and 60% humidity for 7-14 days, then cure in sealed jars, opening them on a set schedule.
What happens during flowering and harvest?
Flowering is when buds form and the room starts to smell. Photoperiod plants begin after you flip to 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness, and autoflowers begin on their own. Most hybrids need 8-10 weeks of flowering, while sativa-leaning strains can take 10-14.
Manage stretch and smell
Expect plants to grow 50-100% taller in the first 2-3 weeks, so keep raising the light. Run the exhaust through a carbon filter 24 hours a day from week 2 of flower on. Check the tent with the lights off for leaks, since stray light during the dark period stresses photoperiods.
Time the harvest by trichomes
Breeder flowering times are estimates. The reliable signal is the color of the trichomes, the resin glands on the buds. Harvest when most are milky white with roughly 10-20% amber. Our guide on how to harvest, dry and cure marijuana covers the full process, and the harvest date calculator helps you plan the week.
Know your state’s home-grow rules
Home cultivation is allowed only in some states, often with plant-count limits and rules that plants be kept in a locked space out of public view. Check your state on our state-by-state hub and confirm with your state’s official cannabis regulator before you buy equipment.
This guide is general horticultural information, not legal advice. Cannabis laws vary by state and city and change often. Confirm the current rules with your state's official cannabis regulator before growing.

Indoor growing FAQ
How long does it take to grow marijuana indoors?
Autoflowers take about 10-12 weeks from sprout to harvest. Feminized photoperiods take 3-5 months: 1-2 weeks as seedlings, 3-8 weeks of veg, and 8-10 weeks of flowering for most hybrids. Add 3-6 weeks for drying and curing before the harvest is ready to use.
How many plants fit in a 4×4 grow tent?
A 4×4 ft tent comfortably holds 2-4 photoperiod plants in 5-7 gallon pots, or 4-6 autoflowers in 3-5 gallon pots. Fewer, larger plants with longer veg and training can fill the same space, so your state's plant-count limit often decides the number.
What size grow light do I need?
Plan on about 30-40 actual watts of quality LED per square foot of canopy for flowering. That is roughly 240-320 W for a 2×4 ft tent and 480-640 W for a 4×4. Check the actual power draw, not the "equivalent" wattage some brands print on the box.
Can you grow marijuana indoors without a grow tent?
Yes. A closet, cabinet or spare room works if you can block all light during the dark period, move air in and out, and keep temperatures between 65°F and 82°F. A tent just makes light-proofing, reflectivity and odor control far easier for a beginner.
How much does one indoor plant yield?
Typical indoor yields run 1-4 oz per autoflower and 2-8 oz per photoperiod plant, depending on genetics, light intensity, pot size and veg time. Use our yield calculator to estimate what your tent size and light can realistically produce.
How often should you water indoor cannabis plants?
Water when the pot feels light and the top 1 inch of the medium is dry. In soil that is usually every 2-4 days; in coco it can be daily once roots fill the pot. Pour until 10-20% drains out the bottom, then let it dry back.
What is the easiest way for a beginner to grow indoors?
Grow 2-3 autoflowers in 3-5 gallon fabric pots of quality potting soil, in a 2×4 ft tent under a dimmable 240-320 W LED on 18/6. That setup avoids light-schedule changes, keeps plants small, and gives you a harvest in roughly 3 months.
Does growing marijuana indoors smell?
Yes, especially from about week 3 of flowering until the buds are cured. An inline fan pulling air through an activated carbon filter, sized to the tent and running continuously, removes most of the odor before air leaves the tent. Replace the filter every 12-18 months.
