Grow Tent
Definition: A grow tent is a portable fabric enclosure with a metal frame, reflective interior lining, and sealable ports for ducting and cords, used to grow cannabis indoors. It creates a light-tight, controllable space where a grower can manage light, temperature, humidity, and odor without permanently modifying a room.
How Grow Tent works
Before tents became common, home growers had to convert closets or build rooms. A tent packs that work into a box you can set up in an afternoon and take down when you move.
Common sizes
| Footprint | Typical plants | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 ft | 1 to 2 | Autoflowers, small spaces |
| 2 x 4 ft | 2 to 4 | Closets, side-by-side runs |
| 3 x 3 ft | 1 to 4 | A trained photoperiod or a few autos |
| 4 x 4 ft | 1 to 9 | Serious home harvests, SCROG |
Plant counts depend on training style and on your state’s home grow limit, which may cap you below what the tent could hold.
What goes inside
- Light: a quality LED sized for the footprint. A rough guide is 30 to 40 watts of modern LED per square foot for flowering.
- Exhaust: an inline fan with a carbon filter for odor. Tent volume in cubic feet is a good minimum CFM; add 25 to 50% to account for the filter and ducting.
- Air movement: one or two clip fans for the canopy.
- Monitoring: a thermometer-hygrometer at canopy height.
Height matters
Most tents are 5 to 7 ft tall. After subtracting the pot, light, and hanging hardware, a 5 ft tent may leave only about 2.5 ft of plant height, which favors compact strains and training.
Inspect zippers and seams with the lights on inside and the room dark outside to catch any light leaks.
