SOG (Sea of Green)

Definition: Sea of green (SOG) is a growing method that packs many small cannabis plants into one space and switches them to flowering after a short vegetative period. Instead of a few large plants with many branches, each plant grows one dominant cola, and together they form a dense, even canopy that is ready to harvest sooner.

How SOG (Sea of Green) works

SOG trades plant size for plant count. Rather than spending 6 to 8 weeks building a big bush, you veg briefly and let numbers fill the light footprint. The payoff is speed: shorter cycles mean more harvests per year from the same space.

Typical setup

  • Density: about 1 plant per square foot, such as 4 in a 2 x 2 ft tent or 16 in a 4 x 4 ft tent.
  • Veg time: 1 to 3 weeks from seedling, or 10 to 14 days for a rooted clone.
  • Height at flip: roughly 12 to 18 inches, so plants finish under 3 ft.
  • Pruning: strip lower branches that won’t reach the canopy.

Choosing genetics

Uniformity is everything. Commercial growers use clones from one mother plant. Home growers often choose compact, fast-flowering indica-leaning feminized seeds or autoflowers that stay short with a single main cola.

The legal catch

SOG depends on plant count, and that is exactly what most state home grow limits regulate. Sixteen plants may be routine in a commercial room but far over the legal cap for a household in many states. If your limit is small, a SCROG with a few larger plants usually produces more from the same footprint. Check your state’s current rules before planning a sea of green; nothing on this page is legal advice.

Grower tipUse square pots of identical size placed edge to edge, since matching containers keep watering, growth rate and canopy height consistent across every plant.
