Autoflower Marijuana Seeds

Autoflower seeds suit growers who want results fast. These plants switch to flowering on their own, usually reaching harvest about 8 to 12 weeks after they sprout, and most stay under 4 feet (1.2 m). That suits small tents, balconies and short outdoor seasons. Buy a 10 or 25 seed pack and a second pack is added free, and every seed is covered by our germination guarantee.

Quick answerAutoflower seeds grow plants that start flowering based on age rather than day length. They carry genetics from Cannabis ruderalis, a hardy type from regions with short summers. Most autoflowers go from seed to harvest in 8 to 12 weeks, stay compact, and can grow under 18 to 20 hours of light from start to finish.

What are autoflower seeds?

Most cannabis is photoperiod: it keeps growing leaves until nights get long, then flowers. Autoflowers ignore that signal. Breeders crossed popular indica and sativa lines with ruderalis, which evolved where summers are too short to wait for long nights. The result grows for about 3 to 5 weeks, then flowers no matter how many hours of light it gets.

Early autoflowers were small and mild. Years of breeding have narrowed the gap considerably, and many modern autos now come close to their photoperiod parents in potency and flavor.

How to grow autoflowers

Autoflowers run on a fixed clock, so anything that slows early growth costs you yield. Set them up right on day one.

  • Start in the final pot. Transplant shock eats days you can't get back. Use 3 to 5 gallon (11-19 L) fabric pots with light, airy soil or coco coir.
  • Run long days. 18 hours on and 6 off is the standard. 20/4 can add a little growth if your power budget allows.
  • Feed lightly. Start at about half the dose on the nutrient label and raise it only if lower leaves turn pale.
  • Train gently. Low-stress training opens the canopy. Skip high-stress training after week 3.
  • Stack outdoor runs. In long-season states you can often fit two autoflower harvests between spring and fall. See when to plant outdoors.

Autoflower seeds FAQ

How long do autoflowers take from seed to harvest?

Most autoflowers take 8 to 12 weeks from sprouting to harvest, and some larger strains run 13 or 14 weeks. The time a breeder lists usually counts from germination. Add 1 to 2 weeks for drying and a few more weeks of curing before the buds are at their best.

What light schedule is best for autoflowers?

18 hours of light and 6 of dark is the most common choice and balances growth with power cost. Some growers run 20/4 for slightly faster growth. Autoflowers will still flower under 12/12, but they yield noticeably less because they get fewer hours of usable light.

Can you grow autoflowers outdoors?

Yes. Autoflowers are popular outdoors because they can finish in summer, ahead of fall rain and frost. Plant once nights stay above about 50°F (10°C). In states with long seasons, start a second round in early summer for a late-summer harvest.

Do autoflowers yield less than photoperiods?

Per plant, usually yes, because the vegetative stage is short and fixed. Indoors, a healthy autoflower often gives about 1 to 4 ounces (28-113 g) of dry bud. Per week of growing time, though, autos compare well, and you can fit more harvests per year into the same space.

Can I top autoflowers?

You can, but timing is tight. If you top, do it once around the fourth or fifth node, usually in week 2 or 3, while the plant is still growing fast. Many growers skip topping and use low-stress training instead, which bends stems without pausing growth.
