Seed Bank

Definition: A cannabis seed bank is a business or collection that stores and distributes marijuana seeds. Retail seed banks stock strains from one or many breeders, keep seeds in controlled cool, dry conditions, and ship them to growers. The term also covers preservation collections that keep rare and landrace genetics viable for future planting.

How Seed Bank works

A breeder creates strains; a seed bank sells and stores them. Some companies do both. Either way, the seed bank is responsible for keeping seeds viable between harvest and your germination tray, which mostly comes down to temperature, humidity and darkness.

What separates a good seed bank

  • Honest specs: one consistent sheet per strain with seed type, flowering time, height, yield and lineage, without inflated THC claims.
  • Mature, well-stored stock: healthy seeds are firm and usually dark with tiger striping or mottling. Pale green or white seeds are often immature.
  • Clear policies: a written germination guarantee, discreet shipping and responsive support.
  • Seed type clarity: obvious labeling of feminized, regular and autoflower seeds.

Keeping seeds viable at home

Seeds are alive and slowly use stored energy. Kept around 40 to 45°F (4 to 7°C) in an airtight container with a desiccant pack, away from light, good seeds can stay viable for several years. Avoid repeated warming and cooling: take seeds out of the fridge only when you plan to plant them, and let the container reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.

Grower tipWrite the purchase date on every seed pack you store. Seeds older than about 3 years often sprout more slowly, so give them a 12 to 24 hour soak before germinating.
