Leggy Seedlings

Definition: Leggy seedlings are young cannabis plants with unusually long, thin stems and widely spaced leaves, caused by stretching toward light that is too weak, too far away or the wrong color. Leggy stems bend or fall over easily. Growers fix stretch by increasing light intensity, adding gentle airflow and burying part of the stem when transplanting.

How Leggy Seedlings works

A seedling that senses dim light puts its energy into height, trying to reach brighter conditions. Plant hormones such as auxins and gibberellins lengthen stem cells, producing a pale, wobbly stalk with big gaps between the first leaf pairs. Heat above about 85°F (29°C) and crowding make it worse.

Common causes

  • Light too far or too weak: a windowsill or a low-power bulb rarely delivers the 200 to 400 PPFD seedlings need.
  • Waiting too long for light: seedlings left in a dark spot for even a day after emerging start stretching.
  • Far-red heavy light: some lamps and shaded spots are rich in far-red wavelengths, which signal shade and trigger stretch.

How to fix it

  • Move LED lights closer, typically 18 to 24 inches for mid-power fixtures, and watch leaves for bleaching.
  • Run a small fan on low so the stem flexes slightly. That movement thickens the stalk within days.
  • Prop floppy stems with a toothpick or bamboo skewer.
  • At the next transplant, set the plant deeper so the long stem sits below the soil line. Cannabis can grow roots from buried stem tissue.

Mild legginess is common and recovers fully. A seedling that stretched 3 to 4 inches before its first true leaves needs support early, or it may snap at the base.

Grower tipTurn the light on before the first seedling breaks the soil. Stretch starts within hours of emergence in a dark spot, and it is easier to prevent than to correct.
