CBD Strain

Definition: A CBD strain is a cannabis variety bred to produce significant amounts of cannabidiol, either as the dominant cannabinoid or in balance with THC. Breeders describe them by CBD to THC ratio, such as 20:1 for very low THC or 1:1 for equal parts. CBD strains grow like other cannabis and need the same care.

How CBD Strain works

Researchers group cannabis into chemotypes based on which cannabinoid dominates. Type I plants are THC-dominant, Type II carry both THC and CBD, and Type III are CBD-dominant. The difference comes down to which enzyme the plant makes from its precursor, CBGA: THCA synthase, CBDA synthase, or both.

Common ratios on seed packs

  • 20:1 or higher: CBD-dominant, very little THC, often 10 to 15% CBD.
  • 4:1 to 8:1: CBD-forward with a small THC share.
  • 1:1: roughly equal CBD and THC, often 6 to 10% of each.

Growing notes

Because the ratio is inherited, most seeds in a well-bred CBD line should land near the advertised split, though some variation is normal. Harvest timing works the same as for THC strains: CBD levels peak in roughly the same window, when most trichomes turn cloudy. Grow conditions affect total cannabinoid output but rarely flip the ratio itself.

People who choose CBD strains often describe the experience as calmer and more clear-headed than THC-dominant cannabis. Effects vary by person and dose. For how CBD itself works chemically, see our CBD entry, and for the hemp side of the story, see hemp.

Grower tipPick the ratio before you pick the strain. Decide whether you want almost no THC or a balanced 1:1 experience, then compare strains within that ratio on yield and flowering time.
