What is the Pure Michigan strain?

Pure Michigan takes its name from the Great Lakes State, where it was first developed for growers who deal with short summers and unpredictable autumns. The goal was a dessert-style indica with real resin output that could still finish before the cold sets in, and the 7-8 week bloom shows that it worked.

Two heavy hitters make up the cross. Oreoz is famous for chocolate-cookie flavor and some of the thickest trichome coverage in modern cannabis. Mendo Breath, a West Coast favorite, contributes caramel sweetness, a calm body effect and the genes for purple color. Together they produce short, thick-stemmed plants that pack dense, rounded buds in deep green and violet.

Expect a gassier, sharper edge than most cookie-dough strains, which is why many people describe it as a dessert with a bite. These feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants, and the phenotypes run fairly uniform, so a pack tends to give you a consistent, matching canopy.

How it feels

People commonly describe a cheerful, chatty start followed by a thick, cozy body calm. It is best kept for evenings, and the effects often last two to three hours.

  1. First 15 minutesWarm, smiling start

Mood lifts, conversation flows and snacks start to sound very good.

  2. 45 to 90 minutesHeavy body comfort

The Mendo Breath side settles in with a deep, cushioned relaxation.

  3. 2 to 3 hoursLights-out finish

Eyelids get heavy and an early bedtime tends to follow.

Reported THC up to 29%: newer consumers should go low and slow. Dry mouth, dry eyes and the munchies are the most common side effects, and very large doses can bring anxiety or dizziness for some people. General reports, not medical guidance.

Aroma, flavor and terpenes

Cracked open, the buds smell like chocolate sandwich cookies dunked in fuel. Sweet dough sits up front, a sharp gas note follows and a faint caramel lingers on the exhale. The smell builds fast in late flower, so run a carbon filter.

Flavor notesChocolateCookiesGasSweet

Hang whole branches to dry for 10-14 days at about 60°F and 60% humidity, then cure in jars for three weeks or more to keep the chocolate-and-gas nose.

Pure Michigan is a natural tent plant. It usually stays between 3 and 4 feet indoors, with thick stems and tight internodes that keep the canopy tidy in a 2×4 or 4×4 ft space. Its moderate difficulty rating comes mostly from bud density, not from any fussiness about feeding.

Environment

  • Vegetative: 72-78°F days and 55-65% relative humidity.
  • Flower: 65-78°F with humidity held near 40-45%. Dense buds trap moisture, so keep relative humidity on the low side as weeks six and seven arrive.
  • Color: dropping night temperatures to about 62-65°F in the final two weeks often pulls out deeper violet hues.

Light and training

Run roughly 550-750 PPFD in veg and 750-950 PPFD in flower. Top once around the fourth or fifth node and spread the branches with low-stress training. Because it is short, a long veg is rarely needed; four to five weeks usually fills a tent. Clear the lower third of the plant before the flip so energy goes to the top sites.

Feeding

A medium feed schedule suits it. Taper nitrogen after the third week of flower and lean on phosphorus and potassium. Under LED, a little cal-mag keeps leaves clean through the heavy resin phase.

Harvest timing

Most plants are ready 7 to 8 weeks after the flip. Check the trichomes with a loupe: a mostly cloudy head gives a livelier effect, while letting 15-20% turn amber pushes the result toward deep, heavy calm.

Seed to jar in about 21 weeks

A sample indoor schedule. The short bloom keeps the whole run under five and a half months.

Week 1Week 21
  • Germinate weeks 1-1

    Moist paper towel, 75-80°F

  • Seedling weeks 2-3

    Soft light, 65-70% RH

  • Vegetate weeks 4-8

Top at node 4-5, then LST

  • Flower weeks 9-16

    7-8 weeks after 12/12

  • Dry and cure weeks 17-21

    Slow dry, then jar cure

Growing Pure Michigan outdoors in the US

This is one of the better dessert strains for growers outside the warm Southwest. Plants usually reach 4 to 6 feet and finish in early to mid October, and they shrug off cooler nights that would stall softer cultivars. Put them in the ground after your last spring frost, once nights stay near 50°F or higher.

Its weak spot is moisture. The buds are tight and sticky, so a cold rain followed by fog can start mold from the inside out. Strip interior leaves for airflow, give each plant space and keep a tarp or hoop cover ready for rainy stretches in late September. Our outdoor planting guide lists planting windows by USDA zone.

Before planting, confirm your state’s rules. Adult home growing is allowed in some states and not in others, and plant counts differ. See marijuana laws by state.

Will it finish where you live?

ExcellentInland California and the Southwest

Warm sun and dry autumn air let the dense buds ripen cleanly.

GoodColorado Front Range and Utah valleys

Low humidity suits it, though an early high-elevation frost can cut it close.

GoodMidwest

Bred for these seasons; a 7-8 week bloom usually beats the hard freezes.

FairNortheast

Cool weather is fine, but humid Septembers raise mold pressure in tight buds.

FairSoutheast and Gulf Coast

Heat and steady humidity make airflow and spacing essential.

Pure Michigan FAQ

Is Pure Michigan indica or sativa?

Pure Michigan is an indica-dominant hybrid. It grows short and stocky with dense buds, and its effects lean toward body comfort and sleepiness after a cheerful, social start.

How strong is Pure Michigan?

Our supplier reports THC in the 20-29% range, so it can be very potent at the top end. Actual numbers depend on phenotype, growing conditions and when you harvest.

How long does Pure Michigan take to flower?

Indoors, most plants finish 7 to 8 weeks after you switch the lights to 12/12. Outdoors, expect to harvest in early to mid October in most of the US.

How much does Pure Michigan yield?

A well-tuned indoor setup can give roughly 1.5 to 1.8 ounces per square foot. Outdoor plants in full sun can produce around 18 to 21 ounces each, depending on soil, season and care.

Is Pure Michigan good for beginners?

It is rated moderate, so a first-time grower can manage it with some attention to humidity. The plant is compact and forgiving on feeding, but its tight buds need good airflow late in flower.

What do Pure Michigan buds smell and taste like?

Expect chocolate cookies and sweet dough with a loud gas note and a light caramel finish. Caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene are the terpenes most often linked to this profile.

Where does Pure Michigan grow best in the US?

Dry inland California and the Southwest give the cleanest outdoor finish, and the Midwest and Colorado also suit it well. Its quick bloom and cool-weather tolerance make it a stronger choice for northern gardens than most dessert strains.

Why do some Pure Michigan plants turn purple?

The color comes largely from the Mendo Breath side of the family. Cooler nights in the last two weeks of flower tend to bring out deeper violet tones, while warm rooms usually keep the buds mostly green.
