Super Soil
Definition: Super soil is a nutrient-dense organic soil mix designed to supply most or all of a cannabis plant's needs from transplant to harvest using plain water. It is built by blending compost, worm castings, and amendments like bone meal, bat guano, and kelp, then letting the mix rest and cook for several weeks before use.
How Super Soil works
The idea is front-loading. Instead of feeding from bottles each week, you build all the nutrition into the container at the start and let soil microbes release it gradually as the plant grows.
Cooking the mix
Freshly mixed amendments are too raw and too strong for roots. Kept moist and warm for about 30 to 60 days, the mix composts slightly as microbes break amendments down into plant-available forms. Skipping this step is a common cause of early nutrient burn.
The layering method
- Fill the bottom half to two-thirds of a large container (7 to 10 gallons or more) with super soil.
- Top it with a mild, lightly amended potting mix.
- Plant the seedling or clone in the mild layer.
Young roots establish in the gentle top layer and reach the rich layer underneath right around the time the plant’s demand peaks in late veg and flower.
Super soil vs. living soil
The two overlap, but the emphasis differs. Super soil is built to carry one plant through one cycle on stored nutrition. Living soil focuses on a long-term soil ecosystem that’s reused and replenished with top dressings each run.
Things to know
- It’s too strong for direct seedling planting.
- Fast, compact autoflowers often do better in a milder mix.
- Correcting a deficiency mid-grow is slower than with liquid nutrients.
- Many organic growers report pleasing aroma and smooth flavor, though results vary with genetics and drying.
