Harvest Window
Definition: The harvest window is the period, typically 1 to 2 weeks long, when cannabis buds have reached peak maturity and are ready to cut. Growers judge it mainly by trichome color under magnification, looking for mostly cloudy heads with some amber. Harvesting early or late shifts potency, aroma and commonly reported effects.
How Harvest Window works
A strain’s listed flowering time is a starting estimate. Actual ripeness varies by plant, light and environment, so start checking about 10 days before the expected finish.
Reading trichomes
Use a 60x jeweler’s loupe or a digital microscope on the buds themselves, not the sugar leaves, which tend to ripen faster.
- Clear: not ready. Cannabinoid production is still underway.
- Cloudy or milky: typically peak THC. Many growers harvest when 70 to 90% of heads are cloudy.
- Amber: THC beginning to break down into CBN. Growers who want a heavier, more relaxed experience often wait for 15 to 30% amber.
Supporting signs
- Most pistils have darkened and curled inward, often 70% or more.
- Calyxes look swollen and tight.
- Fan leaves fade as the plant pulls stored nutrients.
Pistil color alone is unreliable, since heat, light stress or genetics can darken hairs early. Upper buds ripen before lower ones, so some growers harvest in two passes, taking the top colas first and giving lower branches another 5 to 7 days.
After the chop, careful drying and curing preserve the profile you waited for.
